It is intensely perfumy and complex with an alcohol content of approximately 8.1 % by volume. Wild Thing is a light amber Belgian-style ale brewed with 10% flaked maize and Belgian yeast. This is a whole different animal from the Grand Cru: It has a subtle "belgian" aroma and a clean, slightly sweet malty character, with just enough hop bitterness to balance it. If the Dublin Stout is on, do try it; it is a faithful rendition of the real thing, a la Guinness, and is well worth a try. In addition, other craft beers and imports are available on tap, and cask-conditioned versions of at least two of the Full Sail ales are also available. Some of the Full Sail beers sold here are produced at the main brewery in Hood River, especially the bottom-fermented lagers, and ales are produced at this on-premises brewery. Food: The Pilsner Room is run as an adjunct business with McCormick and Schmick's Harborside Restaurant right next door, in the same building. Quality is good, and the menu is designed to appeal to a somewhat upscale urban clientele. Seafood items are a featured specialty. Atmosphere: The Pilsner Room is, properly speaking, not an actual brewpub or brewery tap; it's simply the locale where Full Sail has installed a smallish satellite brewery in Portland. This means that The Pilsner Room is not tied exclusively to Full Sail products, as is evidenced by the variety of beers on tap. The Room itself is rather upscale, furnished and fitted very nicely, and fills with downtown professionals and their ilk in the evenings. It's a fine place to wait for seating the in very good restaurant right next door. Smoking Policy: No Smoking Parking: Challenging at best, nearly impossible at worst. Pay-parking garage, limited on-street parking is limited (and metered). Generous use of space results in a sort of 'English pub meets ski lodge' sort of ambience, with the usual music mix playing in the background (yes, including the Grateful Dead); the place is also decorated with enamel Dutch street signs and French cigarette ads, to give it a vaguely continental character, perhaps. All in all, it's quite agreeable, and perhaps just a bit more upscale than the earlier McMenamins pubs. Nice outdoor patio, too. The location is ideal for folks working at the many businesses in the area, for a lunchtime sandwich and beer, or an after- work happy hour drink. Food: Good simple pub food, including pizzas, burgers, sandwiches, and a few pastas and other main-course dishes, as well as a range of appetizers and snacks. Prices are quite reasonable. Specials are noted on a blackboard near the entry, but nowhere else in the building, sometimes making a special trip back to the board necessary, for waitstaff or patrons. The menu has a sort of "version number" on it, as they like to keep track of those kinds of things here. Atmosphere: The Old Market derives its name from the fact that this was, at one time, a substantial greengrocer's shop, formerly Comella and Sons Market. The premises are very large, and the first impression one gets up entering is one of generous spaciousness, with a nice long wood bar, plenty of booths and tables, a big-screen TV in its own room in back (this room is available for private functions, too), another big space with pool tables and a shuffleboard, and plenty of room for the on-site brewery. The former business also features in some of the decor, including hanging planters made from old greengrocer's weighing scales. The Old Market is a very pleasant, big, spacious pub, and if that's not enough, 10 picnic tables are provided on a patio right out front, next to the entrance (and the parking lot), very nice when the weather is fine. ================================================================= Philadelphia's Steaks & Hoagies brewpub Portland OR Work: 503.239.8544 E-Mail: www.teleport.com/~phillys 6410 SE Milwaukie Av (Duke) Portland, OR 97202 Hours: Sun, noon - 8pm; Mon - Thu, 9am-9pm; Fri, 9AM - 10PM; Sat, 11AM - 10pm Brewer: Andy Armstrong Late night happy hour $1 pints from 9p to closing. btwn Duke & Henery, just North of Bybee, btwen OR 99E (McLaughlin) and the Willamette River From their web page: Up to 11 different handcrafted ales all brewed in the brewery. They range from the light and aromatic Betsy Ross Golden to the rich, full bodied Two Street Stout. Ginger Hefeweizen & Blackberry Porter are some of our favorites. Oregon's smallest licensed microbrewery, and the most authentic Philadelphia Cheese Steaks & Hoagies this side of the Liberty Bell. NWBP Beer: As many as 8 different beers might be available here; selections range from simple pale golden ale and light ginger-flavored weizen, through amber, IPA, and raspberry styles, to porter and stout. The brewing style might best be described as "inspired amateur", as a lot of these beers resemble home-brew; reasonably well-made home-brew, to be sure. Food: Philly cheese steak goes Northwest; somebody from back east would probably think it was "health food", with crisply cooked peppers, lightly sauteed onions, and good bread, along with the requisite cheese and chopped steak. It seems to go okay with the beers. So do the hoagies, the chicken versons of the steak sandwiches, and the sausage sandwiches. Atmosphere: It would be difficult indeed to compare this to any other brewpub or tavern. It's really a simple sandwich shop kind of place, where one might have a sandwich and a cup of coffee or a glass of soda. But there they are, those taps with those beers, all brewed on-premises, and some of them fairly drinkable. Well, why not? Note that the hours are also more akin to a sandwich shop than a pub. ================================================================= BrewHouse Tap Room & Grill Portland Brewing Co aka "PB" or "PBC" brewpub Portland OR Work: 503.226.7623 Home: 503-228-8265 dock keg sales E-Mail: www.portlandbrew.com/portland 2730 NW 31St Av (Nicolai St) Portland, OR 97210 Note: Hours Sunday: 12pm-9pm Monday: 11am-9pm Tues-Thurs: 11am-10pm Friday: 11am-11pm Saturday: 12pm-11pm Free Tours Saturday: 2pm-4 pm RJL: Very good brewery, great on-site restaurant, just bought Saxer Brewing (and with it, the Three Finger Jack and Nor'Wester brands). Beer: Five house brews, four from CO2 taps, one from a nitrous tap (usually the stout), and one or two may also be cask-conditioned and served from hand-pumps. All beers are top-fermented ales, including Coyote Western Ale, White Pelican American Pale, Falcon Red, Big Horn Nut Brown, and Black Seal Stout. One consistent quality of Rock Bottom's beers seems to be that they are all a bit on the light side, perhaps reflecting the somewhat homogenized standards of a brewpub chain with operations in major cities across the USA. Now also offering amazing specialty brews, such as dry-hopped IPA, Witbier, and Belgian (Golden Hammer) styles. Food: Fine range of bistro food, in some cases several notches up from standard tavern fare, and served in generous portions, including appetizers, soups and salads, and several bountiful pasta dishes. Dinner fare adds substantial main-course entrees. Prices, however, are not at the same low-to-moderate level as, say, the McMenamins places. Atmosphere: Relentlessly, annoyingly, 20-something yuppie at weekends, with a line out the door to get into the bar, and a volume level at the pain threshold. Much nicer at a quiet weekend lunch break or earlier in the week, say on a Sunday or Monday evening. After about 8 PM Wednesday through Saturday, though, avoid unless packed bars full of lookalike folks that stepped out of single demographic mass is your idea of a great time. Special Events: Live music at weekends, from a stage above the entryway Parking: Metered on-street and pay lots only. ================================================================= Tuck's Brewery at the Cider Mill brewpub Portland OR Work: 503.246.3909 Work: 503.246.7737 old 6699 SW Capitol Hwy (btw Hillsdale & Multnomah) Portland, OR 97219 Note: Now at the Cider Mill lounge. Imperial Stout, Porter, cask English brown WW Review: Best for feeling drunk in a library setting. The Specs: The walls in one half of the Tugboat are lined with books; the walls of the other half are lined with beer taps and wine bottles. Combined, they make the Tugboat feel like the living room of your dreams--lots to read, and plenty of ready access to alcohol. In fact, with its diminutive size and friendly setting, the Tugboat has the aura of a coffeehouse more than a brewpub, the clientele more likely to discuss Marx than the Mariners. Fun place to play "spot the tatoo (or piercing)". Beer here is pungent, powerfully flavored and not for novices trying to wean themselves off Bud; though the 'Boat's micro in volume, its brews are big in taste, the highly hopped IPA and heavy stout especially relentless in their pursuit of your tongue's attention. Seen & Heard: College grads playing pattycake at their table while Primal Mates played their unpredictable chamber-jazz on the stage. Fred Eckhart review: still used the original mashing and brewing system which Tim Glenn installed in 1993 for a paltry $8K. In 1993, there was the 100-gallon Rubbermaid horse trough mash tun, which held 315-lbs of malt, for the hand-made 120-gallon autoclave style kettle made (I believe) with titanium alloy from a never used nuclear plant. The hand-made wort chiller and pump cost $600 (in 1993), and the gas heater $700. All of it assembled by our inimitable and eccentric engineer-carpenter friend, Tim Glenn. ================================================================= Widmer Brothers Brewing Co brewpub Portland OR Work: 503.281.3333 E-Mail: www.widmer.com Work: 503.281.2437 brewery 929 N. Owned & operated by brothers Kurt & Rob Widmer, the top selling craft brewer in the Pacific Northwest and number five nationally. Ron Ryan is Director of Brewing, x276. Nov 2000: cask-conditioned Irish Stout, IPA (hopmonster!), Ofest, Winternacht, Old Embalmer Bwine, and Test Bier (Harp lager clone), Collaborator Milk Stout, NWBP Beers: 16 beers on tap, all in Widmer's hybrid "German-American" style range, including Alt, Weizen, Hefeweizen, Amber, Widberry, and seasonal beers including Bock, Doppelbock, Maerzen, Winternacht, and several brewer's experimentt. Bock styles wouldn't be considered as such in modern-day Germany, as the German versions are all bottom-fermented; more accurately, these are stronger versions of Widmer's Alt beers. Similarly, the Weizenbiers are actually "American Wheat" versions of the style, made with top-fermenting German Altbier yeast, and have none of the fruity-spicy flavors associated with the Bavarian versions of this style. Another quirk is the serving style; traditionally, Alt beer comes in smallish glasses, and the glasses are simply replaced with fresh ones when empty. American serving styles being what they are, Widmer adopts another hybrid approach, blending several German serving styles: small servings, pints, tall 23-ounce glasses for the Weizenbier drinkers, and 1-liter Masskrugs. CN: Noted on the National Registry of Historic Buildings, the Smithson & McKay Building is now home to the Widmer Gasthaus, an extremely pleasant place to enjoy German food with Northwestern flair, or to just hang out with fine brew. The light wood paneling and soft blue and gold tones of the upholstery are enlivened with plenty of natural light. View beer making from the bar or dining areas. Kids get a root beer & potato pancake with every order. NWBP Food: The German-American theme continues here, with beer-hall classics like Sauerbraten, Schnitzel, and roast chicken, served with a slightly Northwest twist, like freshly sauteed vegetables on the side. One favorite snacker is the Weizenbier Cheese, a spreadable mix of three different kinds of cheeses, onions, spices, and Widmer Weizen, served up with good bread (similar to snacks served in Franconian beer halls). The Gasthaus has no deep-fat-fried foods. Like all good German beer-hall food, Widmer's is tasty, filling, and synonymous with "comfort food". Moderately priced food, a bit higher for specials, making it more expensive than a slice of pizza at Bridgeport or bento at the Lucky Labrador. It is, however, a fine place to tuck into a Teutonic-inspired meal, with a pint of one's favorite Widmer beer alongside. NWBP Atmosphere: Not quite German beer-hall, but very pleasant and comfortable, lots of wood, and smoke-free too. Booths on the side, bigger tables in back to accomodate the large parties that show up in the evenings. The Gasthaus welcomes all ages, and is fine for families with well-behaved youngsters, although the focus is on the adults, especially those who like Widmer's microbrews and hearty food in fine surroundings.
